ABSTRACT

Low back pain is socioeconomic problem of tremendous impact, producing major costs, suffering and in a minority of patients chronic disability. Low back pain is one of the most common and costly medical condition in Egypt. It causes periods of absence from work. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of back strengthening and stretching exercises in treatment of subacute mechanical low back pain due to herniated disc and lumbar spondylosis 24 patients suffering from subacute mechanical low back pain [12 lumbar spondylosis and 12 herniated disc] comprised the material of this work, both groups receive medical treatment. NSAIDs. Analgesics Muscle relaxant for two months In addition to medical treatment all patients teached strengthening and stretching exercises for back muscles to be done 3 times per day for two months. The statistical difference of pain grades before and after treatment in herniated disc group [12 cases] [medical treatment and exercises] was very highly significant [p<0.001]. The statistical difference of pain grades before and after treatment in lumbar spondylosis group [12 cases] [Medical treatment and exercises] was very highly significant [p<0.001]. Strengthing and stretching exercises of back muscles are very effective in treatment of cases of subacute mechanical low back pain due to herniated disc and lumbar spondylosis

Low back pain is a socioeconomic problem of tremendous impact, producing major costs, suffering and in a minority of patients chronic disability. Low back pain is one of the most common and costly medical condition in Egypt. It causes periods of absence from work. The aim of this study was to compare effect of strengthening and stretching back exercises in treatment of subacute mechanical low back pain due to herniated lumbar disc and lumbar spondylosis. 24 patients suffering from subacute mechanical low back pain 12 lumbar spondylosis and 12 herniated disc. Comprised the material of this work, both groups receive medical treatment: NSAIDs. Analgesics, muscle relaxant for two months. In addition to medical treatment all patients teached strengthening and stretching exercises for back muscles to be done 3 times per day for two months. The statistical difference In comparing pain grades in herniated disc group and lumbar spondylosis group [Medical treatment andexercises] was not significant [p>0.05] no great difference in grades of pain between the two groups after treatments.-The statistical difference in comparison of improvement in grades of pain in herniated disc group and lumbar spondylosis group was not significant [p>0.05].-Strengthing and stretching exercises of back muscles produce similar improving effect in treatment of cases of subacute mechanical low back pain due to herniated disc and lumbar spondylosis

ABSTRACT

Low back pain is a socioeconomic problem of tremendous impact, producing major costs, suffering and in a minority of patients chronic disability. Low back pain is one of the most common and costly medical condition in Egypt. It causes periods of absence from work. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of back exercises in treatment of subacute mechanical low back pain. 48 patients suffering from subacute mechanical low back pain [24 lumbar spondylosis and 24 herniated disc]. Comprised the material of this work. They were divided into 2 groups Group I and group II: Each group contains 12 patients with lumbar spondylosis and 12 patients with herniated disc both groups receive medical treatment. NSAIDs Analgesics Muscle relaxant for two months In addition to medical treatment patients in group I teached strengthening and stretching exercises for back muscles to be done 3 times per day for two months. In group I: The statistical difference of pain grades before and after treatment was very highly significant [p < 0.001]. In group II: - The statistical difference of pain grades before and after treatment was very highly significant [p < 0.001]. - The statistical difference in comparing pain grades in group I and group II after treatment was very highly significant [p <0.001]. in comparison of improvement in pain grades in groups I and group II was highly significant [p < 0.01]. Finally we can conclude: Strengthing and stretching exercises of back muscles are very effective in treatment of cases of mechanical low back pain

ABSTRACT

Low back pain is a socioeconomic problem of tremendous impact, producing major costs, suffering and in a minority of patients chronic disability. To know the commonest mechanical disorder causing low hack pain. 314 patients attending outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and. Rehabilitation in National Institute of Neuromotor Rehabilitation in two months suffering Mechanical Low back pain are subjected to this study. Careful disease history. Careful clinical examination for lumbo-sacral spine. Plain x-ray for lumbosacral spine A/P and lateral views for all patients. MRI for lumbosacral spine for patients with low hack pain with suspected herniated disc and spinal stenosis. Mechanical disorders causing low back pain: Back strain Herniated disc Lumbar spondylosis-Spondylolithesis Adult scoliosis, The commonest mechanical disorder causing low back pain was as follows: Lumbar spondylosis: 239 cases [76, 114%] Herniated disc: 26 cases, [8, 28%] Back strain 10 cases, [3, 18%] Spondylolithesis: 10 cases, [3, 18%] Spinal stenosis 3 cases, [0, 95%] No cases with Adult scolions. In our study the commonest mechanical disorder causing low back pain was lumbar spondylosis [76,114%] followed by herniated disc [8, 28%]
